No one outside of Jim Harbaughs family and coaching staff had more face time with the Michigan head coach during his first year on the job than Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer David Turnley.Turnleys nearly four decades as a professional photographer have sent him all over the world. He has heard bullets zip by his head in war zones on three different continents. He visited Cuba with Muhammad Ali. He lived briefly with the Dalai Lama. He sat at Nelson Mandelas dinner table the night after the South African leader was released from prison. And now, hes firmly entrenched with the Wolverine football team and Americas most interesting college coach.Harbaugh granted Turnley, who spent two weeks as a walk-on football player at Michigan in the 1970s, unfettered access to himself and his program. He was intrigued after learning about Turnleys bona fides and the competitive relationship he has with his twin brother, Peter. The Turnleys finished No. 1 and No. 2 in the 1988 World Press Picture of the Year contest -- the photographing worlds version of winning the Super Bowl. David won.Turnley and Harbaugh co-authored a 300-page book titled Enthusiasm Unknown to Mankind, released by Foster Park Publishing in August, filled with a treatise from the coach and more than 300 photos from Harbaughs first year at Michigan. Turnley made more than 70,000 pictures during his first year with the team. He and Harbaugh recently took the time to talk to us about some of their favorites.Turnley: He has what I call the stars in the eyes. This is a man whose energy is unbelievably contagious. Its not easy to describe. Ive seen it with Ali. Ive seen it with Mandela, and certainly with Coach Harbaugh. They always look you in the eye, very direct. Everything about Jim Harbaughs presence is compelling. When he walks into the room he inspires with his presence. People talk about that with generals, I think he more than anyone Ive ever met has that quality. When he walks in a room he assumes the position of leadership. You can literally see the highlight in the eye. Its twinkling out of the eyeballs, theres so much energy.Harbaugh: This was early in training camp, and we had one of those kind of practices. I remember that distinctly like it was yesterday. And its just one of these: Were not going to win a game. Well be lucky if we win one game.(Offensive coordinator Tim Drevno) was saying the same thing. We couldnt get stuff picked up, protected. Feeling like I could go up to the top of the bell tower right now. That was that moment. Dont let me climb the stairs of the bell tower. I just might jump off.Turnley traveled with Harbaugh to several satellite camps in June. He said the coach always had his cleats on for their flights. He compared the brief 10-minute naps Harbaugh took in the air to the type of rest that soldiers would get during the lull of a battle.Turnley: Theres a lot of spirituality on a football field. ...?Jake Butt?is special. Hes a tremendous athlete, tremendous leader. Hes an inspiring guy. Hes reading the Bible in the locker room before getting ready to take the field.Turnley: Its a real privilege to witness the coaches come together at halftime to confer and figured out what theyre trying to tweak. Its a really intense, clear and impressive thing. You feel like youre amidst army generals in a war zone, to be honest.Turnley: This is Dan Dierdorf, one of the all-time great Michigan linemen, talking early in Coach Harbaughs first training camp. They were talking about the direction he was trying to take the team and it was a really thoughtful conversation.Turnley: One of the things that happens being at Michigan is Michigan falls get so beautiful. The skies get big and there are these incredible cumulus clouds, and the light in the afternoon when we go to practice around 3 or 4 is just majestic. I love that.Harbaugh visited France with his wife, Sarah, in the summer of 2015. Turnley, who was in Paris to teach a course, went with the couple to visit the beaches of Normandy, home of the D-Day invasion. Turnley said he saw Sarah jump on Jims back, and it reminded him of images he has seen of men carrying injured soldiers over the same hills in 1944. Custom Hockey Jerseys Store . Vandoorne has been a part of McLarens young driver programme since 2013 and made his debut at this years Bahrain Grand Prix to substitute the injured Alonso for a single race.McLaren confirmed the news after qualifying at the Italian Grand Prix, putting an end to a year of speculation about Buttons future. Although it has been clear for some time that Vandoorne would replace Button at McLaren, Williams showed interest in the 2009 champion if a deal could be found at the right price. However, Button said he made his mind up over the summer break to take the McLaren offer, which will now see him focus on team and car development at the Woking-based team.Im delighted that Ill be staying on as a key member of the McLaren-Honda team, Button said. In fact Im massively excited about my new role, which has come about as a result of a number of in-depth chats with Ron. Specifically, Im looking forward to becoming even more deeply involved in the teams efforts to bring about the success weve all been striving to deliver.I love McLaren-Honda -- I firmly believe its made up of the best bunch of people Ive ever worked with -- and I have no intention of ever driving for another Formula 1 team.To be clear, Im very definitely not retiring. Im contracted for both 2017 and 2018, I intend to work hard on car-development, and Im sure Ill get behind the wheel of the new car at some point.McLaren boss Ron Dennis added: McLaren-Hondas race driver line-up next season will be Fernando and Stoffel -- a perfectly balanced mix of proven brilliance and immense potential. But, before I speak on the subject of either of them, I want to talk about Jenson.dddddddddddd As a race driver for our team these past seven seasons, hes been superb, both on and off the track. And, as were seeing this season, he remains superb - not only fast and fit but also experienced and expert. Hell start his 298th Grand Prix tomorrow; as such, hes the most experienced driver on the grid.Having extended his contract to include 2017 and 2018, hell continue to be a senior, influential and committed member of the team, and will remain centrally involved in the development of our cars. Hell also be available to race for us if circumstances require it.On behalf of all at McLaren-Honda, I want to say how thrilled we are that Jenson has extended his contractual relationship with us. Moreover, Im absolutely certain that the depth of his experience and the currency of his expertise will give us an advantage over our opposition next season.Button came close to leaving McLaren at the end of 2014 when team boss Ron Dennis wanted to keep his teammate Kevin Magnussen on board, but Dennis was outvoted at board level by fellow shareholder Mansour Ojjeh and the Bahraini governments Mumtalakat investment fund. Rumours Button would be replaced by Vandoorne also followed him into the final rounds of the 2015 season, but again the British driver held on for another season to drive alongside Alonso this year.Assuming Button does not return to the grid in 2018, this years Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will mark Buttons 308th and last Formula One race. Since joining Williams at the age of 20, Button has driven for Benetton, Renault, BAR, Honda, Brawn and McLaren, scoring 15 race wins and 50 podiums to date. His championship victory in 2009 remains one of the sports fairytale stories after team boss Ross Brawn made an 11th hour deal with Honda to buy its team before going on to win both drivers and constructors titles.
